With thousands of acres of public access hunting areas, Mercer is a hunters playground. Non-resident licenses and permit fees are very reasonable and can be purchased online.
Deer Hunting
It’s no secret that Wisconsin is consistently a top producer of whitetail deer. Mercer is a premier destination for trophy deer with a thriving deer herd and high success rates. Archery season runs from mid Sept. to mid Nov., firearm season (shotgun or rifle) runs from mid to end of November, & Muzzleloader season runs for 9 days following the firearm season. Let us plan a do-it-yourself hunt, or we have seasoned guides ready to get you on deer.
Waterfowl
Mercer has become a waterfowlers dream. Located in a major flyway, we have plenty of fantastic duck and goose hunting areas that are open to the public. There are 5.2 miles of mowed trail in the Little Turtle Waterfowl Management Area. To access the trail take Popko Circle East south from County Highway FF approximately 1.1 miles to Joe’s Shack Road. At the end of Joe’s Shack Road turn right to the trailhead parking area on the north edge of the Little Turtle Flowage. NOTE: Between the dates of December 15 and April 15 this hunter walking trail is designated part of the MECCA Cross Country Ski Trail. You may not walk or hike on the groomed portion of this trail any time the ground is snow covered between these dates.
Ruffed Grouse
One of the most popular upland game birds, the ruffed grouse can be located by it’s distinct sounds of drumming. Nothing beats the rush of flushing a ruffed grouse in heavy timber. Don’t miss an opportunity to hunt this unique bird that’s native to Wisconsin. Mercer offers two designated ruffed grouse management areas near the Turtle Flambeau Flowage.
Wild Turkey
The wild turkey population is increasing rapidly and Mercer offers some of the best areas that are loaded with big toms. With vast areas of public hunting grounds, we offer a great opportunity to score on a big gobbler. Spring turkey season opens around the second week of April and runs through the third week of May. Non-resident hunters can apply online or buy any leftover permits over-the-counter.
